Sugar prices had been bouncing between Tk60 and Tk65 per kg since the beginning of the year, but then prices started rising in August. Unpacked sugar price was set at Tk74 per kg by the government on Thursday, while the packaged sugar price was set at Tk75 per kg. “Sugar prices were Tk60-62 earlier, but now it is Tk82-85 per kg,” said an angry tea stall owner Babar Hossain, adding that his profits have taken a big hit due to the sugar price hike. He also hinted that in the coming weeks sugar prices may attain stability but edible oil prices could go up by Tk10-12. Earlier, the Commerce Ministry revised soybean oil prices by Tk4 per litre, based on prices in the international market.
