This provides income and independence in an area that is on the edge of survival—an edge that is getting sharper as climate change accelerates and the pre-conditions for subsistence shift under residents’ feet. One very important opportunity for sustaining North Africa is reversing soil erosion and restoring grasslands and forests. Likewise, in North Africa, there is tremendous indigenous knowledge about how to manage forests and agricultural resources with time-tested institutions. They also mean that people do not experience the sharp edge of survival alone. This solidarity will be necessary for the region as well to sustain North Africa.
