Paul Hurst never had any great ambitions to be a manager. At 33 he had dropped down into non-League football, to Ilkeston Town, so that he could get a job while continuing to play part-time. He had just got a degree in professional sports writing and broadcasting from Staffordshire University and was doing work experience with the Rotherham Advertiser on Fridays as well as punditry slots with BBC Radio Sheffield in midweek. Then midway through the 2008-09 season, he and Rob Scott, as the club’s senior players, were placed in temporary charge while Ilkeston looked for a new manager.
