The Manawa Karioi Ecological Restoration Project in Island Bay is on land that is part of Tapu Te Ranga Marae, both established by kaumatua Bruce Stewart. PIERS FULLER/STUFF Manawa Karioi Ecological Restoration Project is on a 12 hectare block in Island Bay. PIERS FULLER/STUFF Kevin and Mary Thomas help plant manuka at Manawa Karioi Ecological Restoration reserve. Manawa Karioi Society, also founded by Stewart, was formed in 1990 to manage the project and the first seedlings were planted in 1991.
