Lake Taupo showing Ruapehu and Tongariro painted by Charles Barraud in 1874 is being auctioned to help create a fund to support new artists. A 19th-century watercolour of Lake Taupō and the mountains to the south is the prize offering of an eclectic collection of art being sold to raise money for future young artists. Other sales of Barraud works on the subject indicate it could fetch between $5000-$10,000. Bezett said while a lot of early New Zealand works weren’t fetching what they may have once, he was sure it would get a good price. The eclectic collection included works by both locals and some well known New Zealanders like Ian Scott, Crispin Corchen and Natasha Keating, she said.
