Pauline Cafferkey, 43 – who first contracted the virus in 2014 – welcomed the two “amazing” boys this week. But she was hit by Ebola a second time nine months later, in October 2015, when the virus also triggered meningitis . In 2016, she was twice readmitted to hospital, and was left with crippling side-effects as a result of her illnesses. But in 2017, she returned to the Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown where she had worked, to meet survivors of Ebola.
