Earthquake And Tsunami Hit Coastal Areas of Sulawesi In Indonesia

Friday evening (local time) a five to ten feet high tsunami hit the city of Palu following a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. Palu is a city with 350,000 inhabitants, located at the end of a long, narrow bay on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is unusual that such an earthquake can trigger a tsunami. The Boxing Day earthquake of 2004, with a magnitude of 9.1, the fourth strongest earthquake ever recorded, triggered a 30 ft high tsunami. A strike-slip earthquake could trigger a tsunami if the conditions are right.
