Early morning magnitude-5.1 earthquake shakes up Bay of Plenty

An early morning 5.1 magnitude earthquake has shaken up the Bay of Plenty on Tuesday. GNS Science duty seismologist John Ristau said the area where the earthquake happened was "a bit of a hotspot" with 15 events of stronger than magnitude-4.0 in the past 10 years. "It's possible it's happening on the same fault, if there is a fault there," Ristau said. "Whether it happened with a fault, or whether it happened some different way; that I'm not entirely certain about." Also earthquakes at the depth involved did not tend to have as many aftershocks as shallower events, although there were exceptions.
