MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala shifts her Wimbledon focus to doubles after a roaring start in the singles event, partnering anew with good friend Priska Madelyn Nugroho of Indonesia as they bid for a second juniors Grand Slam together. Eala and Nugroho are seeded third among the world’s best junior tandems, putting them in serious contention for the prized London grass title after winning the Australian Open last year. For Eala, 16, it’s a crack at her third doubles Grand Slam after capturing the 2021 French Open last month with Russian Oksana Selekhmeteva. Both were triumphant in the Wimbledon singles opening round with Eala taking down Argentina’s Solana Sierra, 6-2, 6-4, and Nugroho clobbering Czech Republic’s Lucie Havlickova, 6-3, 6-2. Eala and Nugroho play Spain’s Ane Mintegi Del Olmo and Italy’s Matilde Paoletti, respectively, in the second round.
