EU leaders including Theresa May will gather tonight in Brussels to discuss the fallout of the elections. Europe’s top table will want to know how Mrs May sees Brexit and the Conservative leadership contest playing out over the summer, at a time when EU politics is focused inward. Most EU leaders, many of them also facing precarious times, instinctively identify with Mrs May, who is generally seen as having done her best in impossible circumstances. Time will be tight for a new prime minister to assume office, form a government and agree a cabinet strategy to salvage or drop the withdrawal deal that is stuck in the House of Commons. They will then have to build trust in Europe, an uphill task.
