EU ‘country of origin’ tech rules could pose risk to consumer safety, say pharmacies

A group representing community pharmacies in Ireland has flagged concerns over new EU digital rules it says could affect online sales of healthcare products. Currently being thrashed out in Europe, the regulations will stipulate which member state is responsible for enforcing rules on products sold cross-border. The ‘country of destination’ principle would see the authorities in the country of the buyer take responsibility. However, at an EU level, Ireland and several other countries have backed the country of origin as the preferred approach under the Digital Services Act. The details of the Digital Services Act, and its accompanying Digital Markets Act, another set of regulations for reining in Big Tech, continue to be negotiated among member states.
