The semi-State company acknowledged that the current crisis will "challenge ESB both operationally and financially during 2020". The total exceptional charge also relates to the closure of its North Wall power station. The ESB, whose CEO is Pat O'Doherty, is also incurring a €5m exceptional charge which represents its contribution to a Just Transition Fund for the Midlands. That includes profits from all its retail and business services in Ireland and the UK, such as Electric Ireland, ESB Energy, ESB eCars and ESB Telecoms. The group noted that it had 110,000 retail customers in Britain at the end of 2019.
