Expansion of retail outlets demonstrates an increased capacity for consumption, itself a reflection of a beaming economy. The country’s top retail chain, Nakumatt, is wading through troubled waters and staring at the possibility of sinking. A once-thriving supermarket chain is saddled with debts and unable to fulfill its commitments such as paying employees on time. With its exponential growth in the past two decades that saw it make an imprint in the region, Nakumatt created direct and indirect jobs through the supply and logistical chains, becoming a key player in the regional economy. Another premier retail outlet, Uchumi, is also tottering on the brink of collapse.
