ED: Buyers must share the responsibility

Photo: Syed Zakir Hossain/Dhaka TribuneIt is specifically the millions of workers employed in these RMG factories who are most at riskAs the second wave of Covid-19 sweeps through the world, our RMG sector is being severely affected due to buyers cancelling previously placed orders. With the lion’s share of Bangladesh’s export earnings coming from its RMG products, this is a worrying setback, with the potential of having ominous repercussions. However, it is specifically the millions of workers employed in these RMG factories who are most at risk, with their livelihoods dependent on these factories. While the government strongly urged all factory owners to retain their employees during the first lockdown period, the reality was that many were laid off, often without notice or severance. As such, there is a duty not only from the government and RMG factory owners to prioritize workers and their rights -- buyers must also take responsibility for their actions and the millions of lives they affect.
