Congress approved the President’s request to extend martial law until December 31, 2018. Panelo recognized that in the end, the Palace would let Congress decide on whether to lift or extend martial law in the south. “The Constitution grants them the authority to decide whether or not it will extend martial law so we leave it to them,” he said when asked if the Palace could convince lawmakers to allow another extension of martial law in Mindanao.
