Speaking during the installation of Lt. Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero as the new military chief, Duterte said that Año could be a special assistant to the president or an undersecretary, whichever is allowed by law, while waiting for the ban to lapse. Año was supposed to step down early from his post in June after Duterte announced his appointment to the DILG in May. Aside from the campaign in the Islamic town, Duterte also praised Año for the involvement of the military in areas where natural calamities struck. As Año turns the leadership of the AFP to Guerrero, the president called on soldiers to support the new military chief by renewing their commitment to the service. Before Duterte concluded his remarks, he announced a pay raise for soldiers that would be effective by January 2018.
