The Eurosceptic Forum for Democracy came from nowhere in the elections to cost the prime minister, Mark Rutte, his majority in the upper chamber. Its success will ring alarm bells across European capitals little more than a month before European elections, at which populist parties are expected to make gains. Thierry Baudet, 36, a telegenic former academic who leads the Forum for Democracy, has called for the Netherlands to quit the European Union but has recently cooled on the idea in public, in part because of the chaos of Brexit.
