Dunedin business owner admits tax scam

Paul Clarke. Photo: ODT filesA Dunedin business owner defrauded Customs for six years and underpaid more than $1.3 million in tax. Because of GST refunds, however, 45-year-old Paul Lambert Clarke only benefited by up to $15,000, the Dunedin District Court has heard. The scam gave his company P L Clarke Limited “a significant cash-flow advantage over competitors”, court documents said. In May 2019, Customs audited Clarke’s importation business, reviewing the legitimacy of 25 imports over seven years.
