The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health advisory Friday about an increase in an antibiotic-resistant strain of the Shigella bacteria. Shigella is highly infectious and causes around 450,000 infections in the U.S. every year, according to the CDC. The bacteria is easily transmissible and there are few antimicrobial treatment options for medical staff treating patients with the drug-resistant XDR strain of Shigella, according to the CDC, which prompted the warning. Last year, 5% of Shigella infections reported to the CDC were caused by the XDR strain of the bacteria.
