Southbound traffic is being turned around at Murchison, with SH6 closed until late Friday afternoon. A 59-year-old Canterbury man died instantly when a boulder smashed through his vehicle's windscreen on a South Island highway. Two people were in the car, travelling north on State Highway 6 towards Murchison in the Tasman district. "It appears a rock has come loose from the rock face, smashed through the windscreen, killing the driver instantly," Sergeant David Lauer said. The crash scene is further south from the recently-opened stretch of highway near Glenhope, which has been closed due to slips since Sunday evening.
