Police vehicles at the corner on State Highway 1 south of Makikihi where a vehicle left the road and smashed into a power pole, killing the driver. A fatal crash on the Waimate Highway (State Highway 1) south of Makikihi cut power for nearly 11 hours to surrounding homes on Sunday. The impact of the crash, which police say occurred about 4.15am, smashed a concrete power pole and caused outages to about 41 customers. Alpine Energy said work on restoring the power supply in the Hook, Hook Sump Rd, Kingsbury Rd, Lower Hook Rd and surrounding areas was delayed because of the Serious Crash Unit investigation. A Canterbury Serious Crash Unit (SCU) spokesman said the driver, the sole-occupant of the vehicle, was heading north towards Timaru when it veered off the road and into the pole.
