Driver held over HK$1m illicit cigarettes

Customs said a 62-year-old man was arrested after 400,000 illicit cigarettes, worth about HK$1 million, were seized from a truck driven by him at the Shenzhen Bay Control Point today. The truck, declared as carrying assorted goods, was intercepted by officers at noon and they found the batch of illicit cigarettes inside 47 cartons mix-loaded with other goods. Under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of HK$2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
