Driven from a Santa Ana tent city, a couple struggles with addiction and the realities of Orange County’s homeless

Laura Kasten, 51, grew up in a three-bedroom house in Fullerton, but most recently called a sprawling tent city on the Santa Ana River home. John and Laura Kasten, married 26 years, ride the bus from their homeless encampment along the Santa Ana River to a motel in Anaheim. In a family album, one photo from around 1999 shows John, Laura and Ashley during a trip to Ellis Island. Behind the scenes, the county homeless czar, Susan Price, and her team had worked frantically to negotiate temporary housing at dozens of motels.
