Drive to bring in foreign science teachers

Low numbers of graduates going into teacher training has led to a shortfall in science teachers that the government hopes to fill by recruiting from abroad Getty ImagesOnly half of physics teachers at state schools have relevant degrees, a report has said, as the government announces a drive to recruit science and maths teachers from abroad. The report, published today by the Sutton Trust, a charity that tackles social inequality, criticises ministers for missing recruitment targets for science teachers. It says that this shortage is jeopardising the future of teenagers studying science subjects at university. It warns of a “science shortfall” caused by the low number of biology, chemistry and physics graduates entering teaching training. Independent schools were most likely to have well-qualified science teachers.
