When the owners of Rio House commissioned a home at the edge of the Brazilian rain forest, they sought a design that would be part of the natural world around them. Rio House, next to the Tijuca National Park outside of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a steel-and-glass box supported by two concrete piers — one that functions as an indoor-outdoor fireplace. The owners didn’t want or need anything big — Rio House measures just 1,500-square-feet — but an open-concept floorplan and retracting window walls create a sense of space and draw natural light into the two-storey residence. Completed in 2018, Rio House took five years to design and build. We learned a lot about the Brazilian construction approach and methods on this project.
