The meteorite flamed across the Chinese city of Yunnan and was captured on a smartphone camera before being uploaded to Twitter. According to the Yunnan Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the fireball was a "bolide", which is the name given to an extremely bright meteor. The fireball effect was created by the friction of the meteor entering the Earth's atmosphere.
