Draft Reinstating Compulsory Military Service Adopted by Lower House

Morocco has officially restored military service for young people aged between 19 and 25 years for 12 months. The Lower House of the Moroccan parliament Wednesday adopted with overwhelming majority the draft bill reinstating compulsory military service for young women and men aged 19 to 24. Compulsory military service, that was lifted in 2006, will come into effect in September 2019, with a first promotion of 10,000 young people of both sexes. Another amendment provides for granting disability pensions to young people who would be victims of accidents during their military service. The budget allocated annually for compulsory military service will amount to 500 million dirhams.
