He was voted the Ameer by the members (Rokon) of Jamaat-e-Islami, according to Jamaat's official website. Dr Shafiqur Rahman passed his MBBS exam from Sylhet Medical College in 1983. During his student life, Dr Shafiqur acted as the president of the Sylhet unit of Chhatra Shibir (the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami). In his many years with Jamaat, Dr Shafiqur occupied many important posts.
