Research from Stockholm University and Manchester University reveals that eggs use chemical signals to “choose” the sperm to mate with. It turns out different women’s eggs attract different men’s sperm – and not necessarily their partner’s. So if a woman’s eggs don’t like her partner’s sperm it could reduce their chances of having a baby together. “Follicular fluid from one female was better at attracting sperm from one male, while follicular fluid from another female was better at attracting sperm from a different male,” said Prof Fitzpatrick. The researchers found that eggs didn’t always attract more sperm from their partner compared to sperm from another male.
