PUTRAJAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was the only candidate for prime minister nominated from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and he is still the party chairman. Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir said this was decided at the party’s supreme council meeting. Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who was appointed the country’s eighth prime minister today, was never named as a potential candidate by the party, stressed Mukhriz. Firstly, the candidate for prime minister from Bersatu is none other than Dr Mahathir. “So any statements made saying that he (Dr Mahathir) is no longer the party chairman is untrue,” said Mukhriz when met after attending a party meeting chaired by Dr Mahathir with its Youth and Women's wings leaders as well as division chiefs.
