The research by Times Higher Education (THE) compared vice-chancellor pay in 2010/11 when it was decided tuition fees should go up to £9,000 and the latest salary figures for 2015/16, and revealed huge variations between institutions. A second piece of research focussed on 57 institutions that had the same vice-chancellor throughout the five-year period. By 2010/11 his pay had fallen “significantly behind the rest of the sector”, with many newly appointed vice-chancellors getting bigger starting salaries. They also pointed out that the increase in his pay package was affected by adjustments to a pension scheme made during the period. According to THE, the average pay for an equivalent university leader in the US was £398,00, and in Australia £546,000.
