Exclusive data shows 132 cases went through the courts in one year after challenges brought under the Victims’ Right to Review (VRR) scheme. VRR was launched in 2013, allowing a victim to demand the decision not to prosecute is reassessed by an independent lawyer. Wilson was jailed for seven years following a retrial brought under VRR in June 2019. A CPS spokesperson said: “The Victims’ Right to Review was introduced by the CPS to make it easier for victims to seek a review of a decision not to bring charges or end proceedings. In 2018-19, of 95,000 decisions eligible for victims to appeal under the VRR scheme, only 0.22 per cent were upheld.”
