Doubts arise about future role of Defence Forces in troubled Mali mission


The Defence Forces have participated in the Mali EU Training Mission since 2013, which aims to strengthen that country's armed forces. The Defence Forces have been a participant in the EU Training Mission (EUTM) in the west African country since 2013, which aims to build up the capacity of Mali’s armed forces. About 20 Defence Forces troops serve on the mission at any one time, providing bomb disposal, combat and human rights training. The Department of Defence said that there are “no plans to end the DF participation in the EU training Mission in Mali”. The Defence Forces contribute about 14 troops to Minusma which are mostly drawn from the Army Ranger Wing, a special forces unit.
