"We really had given up any hope that this phone call would ever come," the Year 8 student recounted, at a speech contest among intermediate schools in the city. "Can you imagine living your life having to come home or go to the hospital to do dialysis [for] four hours, three times a week at least." A huge percentage of these patients are on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. These statistics show less than three percent of New Zealanders needing a kidney transplant received one in 2017. Just having donor added on your drivers licence isn't enough as your family makes the final decision.
