Donald Trump will meet North Korea’s Kim Jong‑un for historic summit

A few months ago Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump were threatening each other: now they intend to meet by May Nicholas Kamm/AFP/Getty ImagesPresident Trump will meet Kim Jong-un in what would be the first face-to-face encounter between leaders of the long-standing enemies. The announcement, made at the White House by South Korea’s national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, quoted Mr Trump as saying that he would meet the North Korean leader by May. It came after Kim promised to suspend nuclear and ballistic missile tests and to carry out talks aimed at denuclearisation. The news, which took Mr Trump’s aides by surprise, is the most dramatic step forward so far in the rapid decrease in tensions on the Korean peninsula this year. It opens the prospect of a meeting between two men who just months ago were menacing each other with personal insults and threats of mutual annihilation.
