The announcement, made at the White House by South Korea’s national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, quoted Mr Trump as saying that he would meet the North Korean leader by May. It came after Kim promised to suspend nuclear and ballistic missile tests and to carry out talks aimed at denuclearisation. The news, which took Mr Trump’s aides by surprise, is the most dramatic step forward so far in the rapid decrease in tensions on the Korean peninsula this year. It opens the prospect of a meeting between two men who just months ago were menacing each other with personal insults and threats of mutual annihilation.
