Trump would later admit to Woodward that publicly, he “wanted to always” play down the severity of the virus. “I wanted to always play it down,” Trump told Woodward on March 19th. “Maybe at some point we’re going to have to stand up and speak out,” Mattis told Coats in May 2019, according to the book. And in a discussion with Woodward, Trump called the US military “suckers” for paying extensive costs to protect South Korea.
