Don: Anonymity should be protected on social media - Nation

KUALA LUMPUR: Anonymity on social media should be protected because some people can only express their thoughts through a pseudonym to protect themselves, said an academician. University of Nottingham assistant professor Gayathry S. Venkiteswaran said they are unable to speak freely and openly because of their identity and position. Gayathry said this at the "Use of Social Media to Express Opinions on the Government and Public Institutions: When Is This a Criminal Offence" forum here on Thursday (Dec 14). Meanwhile, lawyer Nizam Bashir said there is no statutory provision where a person is mandated to identify himself or herself on social media. Nizam gave the example of a blogger who writes commentaries under the pseudonym Sang Kelembai.
