Don’t Conflate Greater Complexity With Greater Danger

The increasing use of drone strikes and the proliferation of “gray zone” security challenges have further blurred the divide between war and peace. Whatever one’s assessments of these judgments, one should not conflate greater complexity with greater danger. The Carnegie Endowment’s Rachel Kleinfeld, author of a forthcoming book that examines how certain countries have overcome extreme violence, contends that recent years represent “a blip in a much longer trajectory” toward greater world peace.
