The Toronto Stock Exchange's main index rose sharply Thursday as Statistics Canada reported the country's surging economic growth blew past forecasts in the second quarter. The S&P/TSX composite index gained 78.74 points to 15,221.87 in a broad-based advance. The second-quarter figures followed an impressive jolt of 3.7 per cent growth in the previous quarter. Amid the rise in oil prices and the positive economic news, the Canadian dollar moved back above 80 cents US. The Dow Jones industrial gained 55.67 points to 21,948.10 and the S&P 500 index rose 14.06 points to 2,471.65.
