Dolby Vision On Xbox Has Arrived. But It's Another Big Mess

The Xbox Preview Program’s Brad Rossetti announced the arrival of the Dolby Vision software upgrade for the Xbox Insider program yesterday, posting a page on xbox.com introducing people to the advantages of Dolby Vision. For while the list of compatible TVs includes LG’s 2017 and 2018 Dolby Vision TVs, a couple of Funai models as well as Sony sets that recently received a Dolby Vision update, there’s no mention of LG’s 2016 Dolby Vision TVs, VIZIO’s Dolby Vision TVs, or TCL Dolby Vision TVs. When Sony added Dolby Vision to some of its TVs last year, for instance, it turned out that their version of Dolby Vision wasn’t compatible with the version of Dolby Vision being run by all the external Dolby Vision sources at the time (such as the Apple TV 4K, and Oppo/LG 4K Blu-ray players). This situation ultimately required all those external Dolby Vision sources to receive their own Dolby Vision updates - but often not for weeks or even months after the Sony TV update had rolled out. And my guess is that this potential issue has come home to roost with the new Xbox Dolby Vision problems.
