“Documenta is one of the biggest strokes of cultural fortune for Hesse, Kassel and beyond,” Hesse Culture Minister Boris Rhein told the news conference. “We have to beware of jealously guarding Documenta all for ourselves, or we will look provincial and petty. About 891,500 visited the Kassel exhibition venues, while 339,000 attended the Athens show. Mr. Szymczyk did not attend the news conference and could not be reached for comment. Mr. Rhein said Documenta will look closely at what caused the budget overshoot and how it could have been foreseen sooner.
