New research has found that supping just two or more drinks containing artificial sweeteners increases the risk of stroke of heart attack by a third. And the danger of early death rockets by 16% for those who drink them, compared to those who don’t, it’s claimed. The new findings may come as a blow to those who have chosen to drink ‘diet’ beverages as part of their efforts to lose weight or be healthier. Dr Yasmin Mossavar-Rahmani, who led the study, said: "Many well-meaning people, especially those who are overweight or obese, drink low-calorie sweetened drinks to cut calories in their diet. “Our research and other observational studies have shown that artificially sweetened beverages may not be harmless and high consumption is associated with a higher risk of stroke and heart disease."
