Half of patients can now survive a deadly form of skin cancer in a breakthrough described by doctors as a “huge milestone”. A therapy that uses two drugs to help the immune system fight advanced melanoma can boost a patient’s long-term survival chances, a study suggests. One patient who saw her tumour shrink to less than half its size described the combination therapy as “amazing”. The disease was considered “untreatable” just a decade ago. Then, only one in 20 patients with advanced melanoma would survive for five years.
