First, we need to assume that resistance is inevitable — there will always be a race between scientists developing antibiotics and pathogens evolving resistance. With the discovery of penicillin and other antibiotic “wonder drugs,” we got ahead of the game, dramatically extending human life span. Preclinical antibiotic discovery is high risk. For these reasons, antibiotic discovery is not an attractive option for the pharmaceutical companies. We examine how microbes defend against pathogenic bacteria in nature, and study the mechanisms that cause harm during infection.
