During his unauthorised absence, the doctor failed to answer four urgent calls from a nurse who needed to get some advice. Eventually, when Kizito returned to work 40 minutes later, he told the nurse: ''I just went to get my dinner.'' ''Should such an emergency arise, any middle grade doctor leaving the emergency department would be expected to notify the nurse in charge that they were leaving the emergency department prior to leaving the department. ''This was not within the conduct expected of a middle grade doctor in charge of the shift.''
