Spending on overtime pay by hospitals has increased by more than a third in the past two years, with one doctor earning an additional £375,000 last year on top of their salary. The amount that NHS trusts spent on premium overtime, based on responses from 114 trusts, was £168 million last year compared with £125 million in 2013-14. Senior medical staff are usually paid £600 for working up to four hours extra, which is around four times more than the normal rate.
