Southland District councillors and staff have held a farewell for councillors Rodney Dobson and Lyall Bailey. Dobson and Bailey have opted not not stand again for the council in the Waiau Aparima ward and the Winton Wallacetown ward, respectively. Dobson said he first got involved with council because farmers in his area wanted him to stand as a councillor. Both councillors said the Around the Mountains Cycle Trail had been a frustrating part of their time on council.
