Thousands passed through the halls of a home for unwed Irish mothers and their children in the County Galway town of Tuam. Among them: the five children seen in the photograph above. Many of the children who survived the appalling conditions were fostered by Irish families or adopted by others abroad, mostly in the United States. Michael Duffy, on the left, was born in 1944; the identities of the other four children are unknown.
