A couple of months after I finished writing a biography on St Patrick for Princeton University Press, I received an unexpected call from a recording producer. She wanted to know whether, in the course of writing the biography, I had grown fond of St Patrick. “Give me a few seconds to think about this,” I said as I gathered my thoughts and pondered the question: do I like St Patrick? And what if it is St Patrick? When I eventually replied to the producer, I said that, no, I did not grow fond of St Patrick.
