Djokovic moves closer to matching Sampras record

Novak DjokovicNovak Djokovic all but ensured he will equal American Pete Sampras' record of ending a year as world No 1 for the sixth time when he reached the Vienna ATP's last eight. If the 33-year-old Serb wins the Vienna title he will match Sampras' record regardless of whether Nadal plays in Bulgaria. Djokovic, who has 39 wins and two defeats in 2020, has been top at season's end five times: in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2018. And Djokovic has another target - beating Federer's all-time best of 310 weeks spent on top of the rankings. Djokovic, a 17-time Grand Slam title winner, last played when losing to Nadal in the French Open final two weeks ago.
